Virginia
a southeastern state, stretches from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, with a long Atlantic Ocean coastline. It's the oldest of the 13 original colonies. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state.
Virginia has a total area of 42,774.2 square miles, including 3,180.13 square miles of water, making it the 35th-largest state by area. The Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 95 counties, along with 38 independent cities that are considered county-equivalents for census purposes. |
